Creative Director, Walker Books
Deirdre McDermott is the Picture Book Publisher and Creative Director at Walker Books, the largest independent children’s publisher in the U.K.
Deirdre was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland and after completing a Visual Communication degree at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, she moved to London, where she joined Walker Books. Within the small, dedicated picture book team of designers and editors at Walker, Deirdre has worked closely with scores of brilliant authors and illustrators including Helen Oxenbury, Anita Jeram, Jimmy Liao and John Burningham, amongst many others.
Deirdre established Walker Éireann in 2013, which published picture books, created by some of Ireland’s foremost bookmakers, in the Irish language. She has a special interest in encouraging Irish illustrators and has collaborated with Chris Haughton on all three, soon to be four, of his picture book titles. Deirdre recently signed Ryan Tubridy for his first picture book, Patrick and the President, which PJ Lynch is currently illustrating, and is working alongside artists Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston on a ground-breaking picture book called A Child of Books – to be published this September, 2016.
